After a week of sailing messy short period windswells at last a NW'ly
groundswell has hit the north shore. So how was Ho'okipa looking today?
Solid logo with frequent mast+ sets - yep, big. Add in yet again howling
winds and the result was a manic day of full power windsurfing. I almost
bottled it when we first arrived on the beach but somehow ignored my fears
and in the end sailed for almost 3 hours. Would like to claim that I
"ripped it up" but that would be lying...was sailing pretty tentatively
most of the time in the mental conditions but still locked in to a fair few
monster waves. There were many more memorable Maui moments today
including:
1) Sharing the water with windsurfing legend Robby Naish on his home
break.
2) Top turning on a solid overhead section to see world champ Kauli Seadi
looking straight up at me as he was about to sail out over the same
wave.
3) Tracking a swell line from out back in tandem with top UK sailor Robby
Swift who then conceded the wave to me with a grin as it began to peak.
4) Overtaking the world's fastest windsurfer Antoine Albeau. (ok, he was
slowing down to wait for a wave, but still...)
Great day. :)
